Name Of Monument ~ Xian’s Terracotta Warriors and Tomb

Type Of Monument ~ Statues / Tomb Location ~ The tomb of Qin Shi Huang is located in the eastern suburbs of Lintong County, 22 miles east of Xian: on the Lishan Mountain in the south and overlooking the Wei River towards north. The lay of the land from Lishan to Mount Hua is shaped dragon-like according to traditional Chinese geomancy. The imperial tomb is at the eye of the dragon. The emperor had chosen well.

 Date Of Construction ~ Qin Shi Huangdi (259 B.C. - 210 B.C. ) , the first Emperor of China, asended the throne at the ripe age of thirteen when construction of his tomb began. On completion of his many conquests , he ordered 700,000 forced laborers to hurry up on building his royal tomb. It was finished just-in-time in 210 B.C. for his use. His son, the second Qin Emperor , saw to his emtombment. Background On Architect and Culture ~ I read two conflicting stories. One was that 700.000 forced laborers produced them and the other was that they were created in workshops by Government workers and by local craftmen. They were produced in a factory line style of production. They were created to guard the tomb of Emperor Quinshihuang to defend him in the afterlife.He was one of the most important rulers in Chinese history. He was made King of the state of Qin at age thirteen and by the time he was 38 , he conqured the six neighboring states to unify China for the first time. To bring seven separate states into one nation he established a uniform measurement and monetary system. To improve industrial productivity he encouraged agricutural reforms and constructed many roads.

Innovations~ Construction ~ Principles : Mass produced like a production / manufacturing line of assembly. Tens of thousands of individual human and animal statues were manufactured within a series of perocesses that began with the molding of solid legs. They solved the problem of how to make a statue free-standing by constructing hollow statues upon solid legs. Hollow heads, arms and legs made of coiled earh were joined together with strips of clay and set upon the solid legs. A fine clay slip was added and details ( eyes, mouth etc. ) were carved in to the clay while it was still pliable. Additional pieces such as ears, beards and armour were modeled separately and attached after which it was fired in some type of kiln at high temperature. They are life- size and life-like. They vary in height, uniform and hairstyle according to their rank. It is believed that the Terracotta Warriors were based on true people. No two are alike. The Tomb : The tomb is unearthed. It is estimated that in size, the mausoleum is larger than the Great pyramid in Egypt. Seen from afar, it is a hill overgrown with vegetation. It is believed that the tomb consists of an interior city and an exterior city. The exterior of the mausoleum is a low earth pyramid with a wide base.

Use And Function : ( The Warriors ) To guard theEmperor defend him in the afterlife.

The Tomb : To house and protect the Emperor and his treasures.

 Other: In 1999 it was reported that the warriors were suffering from nine different types of mold caused by raised temperatures and humidity in the building which houses the soilders. Also the breathe of tourists has had an effect. Some Chinese scientists found soot on the surface of the statues, concluding that the pollution introduced from coal burning plants were responsible for the decaying of the terracotta statues. Four Terracotta warriors and horse from the Mausoleum were displayed at 1982 World’s Fair ; this was the first time China had participated in a World’s Fair since 1904 . Note: Researching this has left me with unanswered questions and a bit confused about the layout of this “ structure” . I assume the Mausoleum houses the Warriors and the Warriors are in front of the Tomb ? ! I’m looking forward to the presentations especially my instructors presentation. I think this Emperor Qin was eccentric possibly narcisstic / ego maniac ? Or he really believed in this afterlife and wanted to assure himself a place there. I don’t know of any ruler that went to this length for their own burial ! It’s crazy !

Yesterday I got a Chimnea ( outdoor fireplace thingy ) for free !    It is the BOMB ! I am so excited cuz' I'm gonna' have me some FIRES ! I have plenty of wood / brush pile to burn. I've wanted one for a long time ! ! I wanted to make a fire as soon as I got home but i didn't . I failed my first test ever !  In Spanish ....... Am I worried ? NO ! Not in the least bit . I'M PROUD TO BE A FAILURE ! j/k ~~~~ I have really been working hard since that test and have finally got a grip on all the verbs ! Plus I went to tutoring last week but what I have to do is just MEMORIZE, MEMORIZE, MEMORIZE !  Here's a lil' story for ya'>> last friday morning I was on my way to work , got in my car and was pulling out of drive ( backwards) and CRASH ! I looked out my window and there was my side mirror BROKEN AND DANGLING ! Oh, I was sooooooooooooooo freekin' SAD ! My inconsiderate neighbor put his big ole' garbage cart behind my car !!!! Whenever he parked there and i was putting out my cart I ALWAYS made sure i put in on the grass area AWAY from his car cuz' I knew he'd be pulling out ! I AM CONSIDERATE AND ALWAYS AM THINKING OF OTHERS !   But do I get that in return ?? Fuk no ! ! Oh, believe me, I definitely said something to him about it in a NICE neighborly way ?? !! but he didn't seem to really give a crap  , after work I was on a mission. The break was nice and straight and clean so i got some super glue and glued that sucka' back on !! I didn't make a mess , get glue all over . It looks pretty damn good ! ! I rock !
